mindful midtown

Olivia Coelho Good board meeting tonight. Honestly I am so happy to own a home and a business in midtown. This is the most loving and supportive community.

- Olivia Coelho, Midtown Business Association board member, in response to Wednesday's meeting regarding the unfortunate shooting that happened last Saturday.

More on the incident here.

Whoa!  Is it really September already?  And ten days in, no less?  And is it really that time of the month again?  You know, the second Saturday of the month...  I will be participating in Sellout Buyout, which is a brilliant event that happens quarterly in Sacramento.  Local artists and designers of all sorts gather to sell their goods.  There is always great stuff - jewelry, clothing, handmade goods, one-of-a-kind, the prices are totally reasonable, plus you are supporting local people doing creative things.  It seems like a no-brainer.  So, do check it out if you are local.  Plus I will be slanging some of those chalkboards I've been making.  Come say hello!

9/11 @ bows & arrows - 1712 L street 3-9pm
rumor has it - this may be the last one - major bummer!!  maybe if we get a really amazing turnout the great minds behind this event will reconsider...

no place better than here...

My incredibly talented friend, Jesse Vasquez, is having an art opening this weekend in Sacramento.  If you are around, check it out!  Sea of Bees is playing, which I am majorly looking forward to seeing.  I have not seen her live... but I do know that this city of ours is in mad love with her, and I am excited to see for myself!

2nd saturday - stefan burnett

1 year ago from this coming 2nd Saturday, I participated in the if you do me, I'll do you portrait show at Bows and Arrows.  I was lucky enough to have Stefan Burnett choose my name, which meant that he was to create a portrait of me using his medium of choice.  Remember?

Stefan is an incredibly talented painter, whose work I was first introduced to at Olipom quite a few years ago.  He is also an incredibly rad dude, who I always enjoy running into around town!  Here is a photograph of the his piece from that show last year:

Bows and Arrows invited him back to show more of his work this month.    If you live in the area, come check it out!  The reception is tomorrow - 2nd Saturday.  There will also be a special performance by MOM - who happens to be the very definition of performance art.  Come check it out if you can!

oh july!

So, it has been a bit of a slow start here at 34H, but I have a feeling that will change soon!  Personally, I have been feeling really inspired lately and finally feel like perhaps life is slowing down a bit, and I can refocus some attention here.  So far the month of July has been jam packed with awesome summery fun.  Lana, Scott and Omar visiting from Minneapolis, which included lots of pool time, a trip to the Academy of Science building in San Francisco, BBQs, and overall entertainment provided by little O.  A perfect family beach trip to Santa Cruz where we lodged literally a block away from the crashing waves.  Amazing family meals on the deck, a constant flow of mimosas, pictionary, scrabble, and a little bit of hide and seek.  Here's a little collage...

I am totally loving all those blues.  Here's more... photo album.

The Saturday after our Santa Cruz trip was the reception for the Portrait Show.  It was a great turnout and the pieces were really fantastic.  Lana accompanied me to the reception, which was really great because she got to meet some of my dear friends (who hear about her ALL the time). Zeina was in Boston at that point for a wedding, but will have to come check it out next time she is in town!  I have a few favorites from the show that I will post about as soon as I make it back over to Bows & Arrows with my camera.  In the meantime, Olivia blogged about it here: Bows & Arrows .

ok, more soon.

I Y D M I D Y

sarah barkawi
I have been asked to participate in the 2nd installment of a collaborative portrait show titled "if you do me, i'll do you" by my dear friends Richard St. Ofle and Olivia Coehlo.  This is a portrait show where each contributor is both the artist as well as the subject.  22 local Sacramentans met back in May and drew names of the individual they are to 'do.'  Artists are free to use any medium they desire.

I drew Janine Mapurunga's  name.  She is a brilliant photographer who lives in Barcelona, but travels to Sacramento on occassion for work and just so happened to be around for this show. She is pictured 2nd to my right in the flier above.  I have many ideas for my portrait of Janine.  I'm sure I will post the final product on 34hummingbird.

My buddy Stefan - pictured directly above me - drew my name.  He is an incredible painter and I am stoked to see what he creates.  He asked me for a few pictures of myself where I am not smiling and my teeth are not visible.  This proved to be a bit difficult to find - however I managed to scrounge up a few options for him that he states will work perfectly!

These portraits will be on display at Bows & Arrows 1712 L. Street Midtown Sacramento, CA beginning on July 11th, 2009 (2nd Saturday).

And to top all of this awesomeness off... Lana will be visiting from Minneapolis the opening weekend!
